There are special names for the efficiency ratings of various types of equipment. Air conditioning equipment is rated by the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating, or SEER. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the unit.

Preferably auto if you have an old furnace. That way, the fan operates only when the temperature requires it. This is the most used and the most efficient setting on the none energy efficiency furnace. However, there are advantages to using the “on” setting if you have a newer furnace with ECM motor (energy efficiency). Air is constantly filtered through the unit’s air filter, and the constantly circulating air results in an even temperature throughout the house which makes it confortable.

Most filters are changed every 60 or 90 days and at 12 months replace them, however, it depends on how clean your duct work is. The best practice is to check your filter every time you pay your gas bill, and change it as required as a dirty filter will increase your gas cost and a clean filter will save you money and will provide greater comfort.

Depending on which thermostat you have, they are usually out of calibration within 5 yrs, meaning the temperature set is no longer accurate. However the new ones on the market with Wi-Fi capabilities are self-calibrating.

It may be restricted duct work, or a closed return air duct, or it may be an undersized duct system for the home.
